France is a semi-presidential representative democratic republic; the President of France is head of state and the Prime Minister of France the head of government. The government exercises executive power. The government, the Senate and the National Assembly are in charge of legislative power. The Judiciary is independent with regards to the executive and the legislature.

France is one of the founding members of the European Union, as well as of the United Nations. It is also a member of the G8 and of the United Nations Security Council.
