Introduction

It may not have the best weather of France’s coastal towns, but the quality of its waves attracts surfers of all ages all year round. The annual Biarritz Surf Festival is naturally a big event, but rugby is also become a much-loved local sport, with stickers for the Biarritz Olympique team dotted around the city. Swot up on culture at the Museum of Oriental and Asian Art, sunbathe on fashionable Plage Miramar or relax at one of the spas that specialises in thalassotherapy, a treatment that uses seawater. As a popular tourist resort there is no shortage of restaurants, ranging from fine dining establishments to casual eateries offering pintxos, which are Basque tapas served on skewers. In the evenings hit the bars or have a flutter at the late-opening Casino Municipal.
