Introduction

Portsmouth has several railway stations: Portsmouth Harbour, Portsmouth and Southsea (located right at the heart of the city centre), Fratton, Hilsea and Cosham (on the mainland). South West Trains provide services to London Waterloo, Guildford, Basingstoke and Southampton Central, whilst First Great Western offers connections to Cardiff Central, Southampton, Salisbury, Bath and Bristol. Southern provides train services to Brighton and London Victoria.


From Portsmouth Harbour there are passenger ferries to Gosport and the Isle of Wight as well as to Caen, Cherbourg-Octeville, St Malo, Le Havre (France), Bilbao (Spain) and the Channel Islands.


The closest airport to Portsmouth is Southampton Airport,(approximately 30 minutes away by car). There are train services from the airport to Portsmouth but you will have to change at Southampton Central or Eastleigh. Heathrow and Gatwick Airport are both about 60–90 minutes (by car). From Heathrow, there are regular National Express coach services to Portsmouth.


Local buses serve Portsmouth as well as its the surroundings areas. There are also long distance services to Chichester, Worthing, Brighton, London, Cornwall, Bradford, Birkenhead or Eastbourne. The buses either depart from ‘The Hard Interchange’, Commercial Road North, Commercial Road South or Isambard Brunel Road.
