About:
Originally a festival intended as a tribute to St Joseph, Las Fallas are in fact huge papiere mache sculptures which for 4 days in mid-March each year take over the town of Valencia when they appear overnight on March 16th with over 350 being placed by early morning (a process known as the Planta). Teams build the Fallas with lots of different themes and targets; figures can become mocking of celebrities, highlight a particularly topical issue or be a political statement. Whilst the figures are on show around the town, festivities accompany the show; open-air festivals and music concerts, bull-fighting and street parties as well as many other activities take place to keep locals and visitors alike entertained. The other highlight of Las Fallas festivites are the fireworks displays which take place at 14.00 each day and culminate in the burning of all the Fallas displays around the town on midnight of the final day.
