Wilhelmshaven, Germany

Rail Guide to Wilhelmshaven

Introduction

As Germany’s largest naval base much of the port is taken up by the military, however there’s a promenade by the beach with plenty of leisurely amenities on offer. The South Beach has hotels, restaurants and bars, all with views of the Arngast lighthouse, and as befits a coastal town, watersports are the most popular activity for locals and visitors alike. Try canoeing, surfing, sailing or rowing, or there’s the gentler pastime of travelling by cruise out onto the North Sea.

Still on the beach, there is an aquarium and a museum devoted to the German navy; other cultural exploits include a visit to the Wilhelmshaven Coastal Museum, the Pumpwerk Culture Centre and the Stadttheater.
