Interrail Pass Zone C
Germany
Germany is a country of delightful contrasts. The buzzing, gritty and optimistic Berlin in the East, the industrial ‘Ruhrgebiet’ in the West, the strong air of elegance and cleanliness of the North and the picture-perfect villages combined with world-famous bierkeller in the South! Use your Interrail Pass to explore all of the variety on offer.
The Bierfest in Bavaria has long been a favourite of tourists and locals alike. If you do decide to join in the festivities, make use of the trains from Munich to drop in on the fairytale castles nestled in the foothills of the Alps. Your Interrail Pass can take you northwest on the ICE rail-route running alongside the Rhine. This takes you to cosmopolitan Cologne along a route offering stunning views of the verdant valley covered in dense vineyards.
Denmark
Denmark is best explored during the summer months as the short days and colder weather experienced between October and April can be rather hostile. The spring months are amongst the nicest in Denmark as there is such a marked change to lush greenery and flowering shoots. The summer can prove to be rather touristy and commercial, especially in the capital, Copenhagen.
The country is compact and well served by rail links making interrailing efficient and simple. Rail links to Germany as well as the Scandinavian countries are now also well-established so making a zone B and C combination ticket an attractive option.
Austria
After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and its imperialist past, Austria has now become a more minor player on the European stage than its history would suggest.
Over 60% of Austria’s surface area lies within the Alpine region whilst nearly 50% is covered by forest. It is therefore clear why the country continues to attract tourists year after year in its ski resorts and in the summer months for walking and hiking holidays. The major cities including Salzburg and Innsbruck lie just beyond the German border and mirror in style much of the Bavarian charm. Your Interrail Pass can take you from Munich in Germany to Salzburg in Austria in just one and a half hours!
Switzerland
Switzerland is known for its famous bank accounts, watches and cuckoo clocks! Beyond this though, Switzerland is home to breathtaking mountain scenes, one of the world’s most efficient rail networks and to a culturally diverse people who nevertheless share a strong common identity.
The mountain terrain of Switzerland attracts many skiers in the winter, and mountain bikers and hikers in the summer. For train travellers, we suggest the Glacier-express journey running from Zermatt to Davos. This route is truly spectacular; running for two hours over 291 bridges, through 91 tunnels and speeding over the Oberalp pass at a height of 2,033m/6,670 ft!
