Interrail Pass Zone E

France

France has much to offer by way of contrasts. With the flexibility of your Interrail Pass, you can be on the rugged Brittany coastline on one day and at the foot of the Alps and the jagged ridges of the Pyrenees the next. Equally, the summer sun draws visitors to the golden sun and sand of the South. France's high-class and efficient train network make the whole country accessible in a short space of time.

Though the capital, Paris remains France’s most famous city it is tempting to say that it has been overrated as France’s top tourist destination. Particularly in the summer months many locals dissert their home city leaving it lacking in atmosphere. Try instead the Burgundy and Champagne regions. Not only are they brimming with scenic rail routes, they are also brimming in the country’s finest wines.

Belgium

Brussels, Belguim’s capital, has been at the heart of European affairs for over 1,000 years. Forming the meeting point between Latin and Nordic cultures, both French and German as well as Flemish are still official languages.

Modern-day Belgium is known not only for its fine chocolate, but also for its importance on the political stage. Being home to the European Union and NATO as well as many other international organizations, there is not doubt that Belgium will continue to form a cornerstone in international affairs and therefore be worthy of any Interrailer’s visit!

The Netherlands

Known for their windmills, tulips and clogs, one could be forgiven for thinking the Dutch people still lead a provincial, rural life. The reality is however, very different. Nowadays the inhabitants of the Netherland’s major cities are known for their linguistic abilities (with almost all speaking near perfect English and many having other additional languages too!), and their strong liberal ideals.

Amsterdam remains the primary target for visitors with enough life to fill any other city five times over, however cities such as The Hague and Rotterdam are also worth a mention. Less than an hour away from Amsterdam, they offer a real contrast to the capital within easy reach with your Interrail Pass.

Luxembourg

Comprising just 1,000 square miles, Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe. It’s 400,000 inhabitants are however, fiercely proud of their distinct culture and traditions. The country’s recent history has been bloody with occupation in both World Wars taking its toll. Hamm just 3 miles out of Luxembourg city is home to a cemetery where nearly 5,000 fallen servicemen rest amidst perfect, peaceful greenery.

The fortress which is Luxembourg city is still home to impressive ramparts and cliffs and better still, it is fairly compact with most sights doable on foot. The low value-added taxes make it a haven for many shoppers from neighbouring countries whilst its banking system attracts foreign customers on a par with Switzerland.
