Spain
Perhaps unsurprisingly given its warmth of climate and welcome, Spain has proved to be one of the world’s favourite tourist destinations for years; in 2001 it actually ranked third! The laid-back atmosphere of the Spaniards, the warm climate and the sandy beaches continue to pull in the crowds.
Much of the countryside can be described as baron and dry, particularly in the summer months. In Spain it is the beaches and the lively cities which are primary Interrail destinations. However, the town of Santander on the northern coast provides a welcome climate combined with sandy beaches in the summer, whilst still being large enough to provide a variety of entertainment and sights to its visitors.
Portugal
Not one of the economically more prosperous countries in Europe, but certainly rich in tradition and well-preserved culture. This is a country full of contrasts and well-preserved history. The medieval cities with ancient palaces and cathedrals give a sense of Portugal’s elegant past, whilst the 10,000 year-old cave paintings found in the north of the country provide evidence of Portugal’s status as one of the oldest countries of Europe.
Portugal’s capital, Lisbon is also the central-hub of all the countries rail-networks and therefore a likely stopping point for all Interrailers. Make sure you visit the Bairro Alto district which is home to the vibrant nightlife. Traditional Portuguese Fadista music is played here providing a wealth of nostalgia and emotion!
Morocco
Though the Interrail Pass is essentially designed for traveling in Europe, the chance to visit a whole new continent is surely not to be missed. Included in your Zone F ticket is limitless rail travel in Morocco, northern Africa. Here you will really begin to see the contrasts which the world has to offer.
The Mosques and minarets of Marrakesh are stunning on the city’s skyline. Soak up the glorious sunshine along with the Arabic architecture of the city and experience the local bustle in one of the many street markets.
