Italy
Head to the boot for the a taste of the authentic romance which is Italy. Italy provides a refreshing change in that it is not the capital that is the country’s dominant tourist destination. Instead the Piazza’s of Florence, gondolas of Venice and history of Rome serve to as strong tourist magnates.
Though the cities are not to be missed, you’d be foolish to overlook the quaint towns dotted along Italy’s extensive coastline. These give a more traditional picture of Italy far away from the often tourist-dominated cities. The Interrail Pass will take you south to the heel of the boot which is far more rural and less affluent than the North. However, what the region lacks in glamour it but more than makes up for in character and traditional charm.
Greece
Greece is known not just for kebabs, (which admittedly may be enough in itself to attract some amongst you!) but also for its magnificent history and fantastic weather. As the birthplace of much of western Europe’s cultural beginnings, the remains of Greece’s past also represent a snapshot of the European continent’s history.
The Acropolis is possibly the most visited site in Athens but is just one of those on offer. Byzantine buildings are not likely to be on the average Interrailer’s tour, so make a point of seeing some of these fantastic architectural jewels. Once you’ve had your cultural fix, Greece’s beaches represent the perfect way to relax.
Turkey
Turkey’s popularity continues to grow as an Interrail and more general tourist destination. However, for other tourists, the cheap coastal resorts and attractive climate are the main points of interest. Given the abundance of more restful beaches in other destinations, we suggest Interrailers take a different approach.
Turkey’s capital, Istanbul is a wonderful meeting point of European and Eastern cultures and traditions. As the former capital of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires there is still an air of grandeur, offering an abundance of varied culture and tradition. Your Interrail Pass also provides you with easy access to more rural areas which give you a less diluted flavour of the East.
