Juhannus Midsummer Celebration

The midsummer celebrations are a big deal in Tampere, in fact they are the biggest event in the whole of Finland. They take place between the 21st and 26th of June, when the sun doesn’t set, therefore night time is reduced to a mere dusk for a couple of hours until the run starts to rise again. People get together, drink a lot, and grill sausages on a fire but traditionally houses were decorated with flowers and dances would be performed on the streets. The proliferation of lakes in Tampere means that many locals celebrate on islands or near the water, otherwise retreat to a pub to join in the revelry. Schnapps and beer are the most popular drinks.
