Introduction

Take the kids on a day trip to play among the dinosaurs at Saurier Park or get lost in Kleinwelka Maze, the biggest maze in the country. But while this pretty hilltop town is child-friendly, plenty of sightseeing can be done by the adults too, whether it’s observing the vistas from one of three viewing towers or swotting up on Sorbian culture at the Sorbian Museum. Bautzen’s two prisons are also landmarks, and give a glimpse into the world of those incarcerated by the Stasi during the Cold War; one of these is now a memorial for GDR’s victims. Other important sights are the waterworks and pumping station, which date back to the 16th century, and the Reichenturm, a 56 metre leaning tower that offers fantastic views over the old town. Fun fact: Asteroid 11580 Bautzen is named after the town.
