Lourdes has been an important pilgrimage destination since 1858, when 14 year old Bernadette Soubirous said the Virgin Mary appeared before her 11 times. The Sanctuaires Notres Dames de Lourdes is visited by around six million people visit each year, with some believing the spring waters of the grotto have healing properties. Given the high numbers of tourists Lourdes receives, trappings like cheap souvenir shops and overpriced restaurants have sprung up amongst the main attractions, which are mostly dedicated to Bernadette. Elsewhere there’s the impressive hilltop Chateau Fort, and a cable car that offers great views over the Pyrenees.
