La Tomatina

Millions of over-ripe tomatoes – 120 tons to be precise – are laid out, ready to be thrown!

On the last Wednesday in August each year, between water cannon shots at 11 and 1, the streets of Buñol,
Spain turn into the world’s biggest fruit fight! Millions of over-ripe tomatoes – 120 tons to be precise –
are laid out, ready to be thrown at everyone and everything in one of the messiest yet enjoyable festivals there is. La Tomatina has been taking place since at least 1944, celebrating Buñol’s patron saint, Luis Bertán, and the Virgin Mary, and has gained popularity since, with people from all over the world joining in as well as the locals.
The day before the ‘battle’ you can expect music, dancing and fireworks as the whole town celebrates,
and in the evening, a paella making competition takes place before a feast where, among the array of
other delicious Spanish cuisine, the fresh paella is served! This event is definitely one for your bucket list
if you enjoy once in a lifetime things!
