Introduction

Founded during the Roman era, the romantic town of Füssen is rich in history and culture, as well as being a great base for nature lovers. Surrounded by the Alps as well as several large lakes, with the added bonus of a charming medieval town centre, it’s no wonder so many couples choose Füssenfor their weekend getaways. If you’ve ever watched The Great Escape you may recognise the scenery, as some of Steve McQueen’s motorcycle stunts were filmed in and around here.

There is a maze of cobbled streets to explore, which lead to imposing buildings like the baroque High Palace, housing gothic and Renaissance artworks, and the stunning St. Mang’s Benedictine Monastery, a baroque church with Bavaria’s oldest fresco and the Füssen Heritage Museum, with its collection of lutes and violins. Incidentally Füssen was one of Europe’s main production centres for these musical instruments in the 16th and 17th centuries. There are also several castles which wouldn’t look out of place in a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, such as Hohenschwangau Castle, the former home of King Ludwig II.
