King's day is a day-long festival which takes place all across the city of Amsterdam and celebrates the Birthday of King Willem-Alexander with various concerts and performances, particularly in Amsterdam. People celebrating the festival wear orange to honour the royal family and many multi coloured boats with parties on board fill the canals. Massive flea markets also take place as part of the celebrations, as this is historically a day where the people of the Netherlands are permitted to sell their goods in the street with no need for a permit and without having to pay any sales taxes. One of the most famous and largest sales is in the Jordaan Quarter in Amsterdam, although with about a fifth of the Dutch population taking part, you'll find sales taking place everywhere!
