Trier's Porta Nigra is one of best preserved examples of a Roman city gate anywhere in Europe. Porta Nigra is actually Latin for black gate. As a world heritage site the Porta Nigra will continue to be protected for future generations to enjoy, having said that this doesn't stop visitors from being able to enter the old city gate and wander around the walkways and peer out over Trier.
With plenty of cafes and restaurants with outdoor seating in the area we recommend that you plan to stop for lunch by the Porta Nigra and sit back and enjoy the view.
